What is WordPress and why use WordPress for Photography Websites?
WordPress is a free blogging tool and content management system which just simply means that once you understand a few basic fundamentals, it is easy to maintain and update your website without worrying about having to learn web design or any website coding language.
WordPress also includes a “plug-in” system which allows you to add new features to your website at any time.
The actual Graphical web-design elements of WordPress are contained in a WordPress “Theme” which is part of WordPress’ key strengths – essentially your content sits in one area of WordPress and your design “theme” sits in another. If you ever decide to change your website design, you simply add a new theme to wordpress and your site will instantly be updated to a new look without impacting on your site content.
The underlying structure of WordPress has been heavily optimised to be search engine friendly and by implementing a WordPress-based website the core structure of your site will already meet many of the basic rules that ensure your site is ready to start ranking properly on Google.
Use the correct WordPress though!
There are two WordPress platforms out there. They are the same, but different!
I know, it starts to get confusing this stuff, but basically there is a site called WordPress.com which allows you to create a wordpress website on their web servers for free, and they give you your own subdomain which would be something like yourwebsitename.wordpress.com – there are no hosting fees, and no setup fees.
So should I setup my site there if it is free?
No. Absolutely NOT. Although the site is free, it is not your own domain name, and you will be limited to what else you can do with the site. WordPress.com is not designed for professional websites, it is a platform for someone to setup a free blog at zero cost – think of it as a hobbyist platform.
WordPress does take a little bit of work to set up and learn, but once you get to know it, it is very simple to use and maintain and your search results will thank you for it.
