Photographer’s here’s a quick blog post on How NOT to optimise your site SEO
When you are new to SEO on a photography website, it can be easy to slip into some classic search engine optimisation errors that harken back to the early days of search engines and how they used to work.
I’m sure we’ve all done it at some point and no doubt many of you are still doing it but perhaps unaware of the things to avoid – here are three classic examples of how not to optimize your site for seo purposes.
Example #1 – The Wedding Photographer who has photographed Everywhere
Yes, you know the one – go to their homepage, scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see the usual keyword stuffed paragraph:-
“Wedding photography Manchester, Wedding Photography Liverpool, Speke Wedding Photography, Wedding photographer Yorkshire……and so the list goes on….”
You have as much chance trying to rank this page for all those keywords as you have getting Jerry Ghionis to assist you for free at your next wedding. This is called keyword stuffing and is frowned on by Google.
Example #2 – The Wedding Photographer who has just photographed at a great venue but precedes to tell you about it 30 or 40 times in the same blog post
We just shot our first wedding at the Omni Rosen Orlando. Weddings at Omni Rosen Orlando are always a plush affair. This being our first wedding at Omni Rosen Orlando, we were not sure what to expect and many other photographers who have photographed at Omni Rosen Orlando tell us ….blah blah blah……
This is another example of keyword stuffing, but in this case you have tried to use the keywords in proper context – however you have overdone it – keep keyword placement natural.
Example #3 – The photographer who just can’t seem to speak plain English
We shot a lot of weddings and portrait photography carlisle. Portrait photography Carlisle in Wales is where we have our studio……yep, they need to go back to school.
This is an example of trying to use a keyword that you want to rank for (in this case “portrait photography carlisle”), in proper context within a sentence – however that keyword phrase isn’t commonly used within a sentence – instead use similar phrases e.g. portrait photographer in Carlisle, portrait photography studio in carlisle – Google will still pick up on your keywords.
Those are just three very basic examples of keyword stuffing and unnatural keyword placement. I’ve done it, we’ve all done it – just make sure you stop doing it if you want your website to appear anywhere in the rankings.
