As you will know if you have ever attended one of my talks on marketing, I’m a great believer in branding and consistency in everything you do. As a successful photography business, solid branding must extend across every part of your business, not just your website, but your business premises, your literature and how you package and present your products to your clients.
Now to illustrate what I mean, think about some recent shopping experiences you may have had. You know that low-end store that simply throws your goods into a plastic bag and sends you on your way. Contrast that to the higher-end store that takes time to package up your goods carefully, with everything reflecting the brand of the business and what that brand represents. What store leaves the best impression on you?
Well ask yourself what does your brand represent? How do you package the final product provided to your clients?
This is something we have looked at closely for both our photography businesses, Alan Hutchison Photography and Allure Boudoir Photography, and whilst we believe we deliver an amazing experience and product for our clients I am always looking at ways to improve our packaging to reflect the high value of our products.
One part of our business that always concerned me was our packaging of our digital products. Whilst we won’t photograph a wedding without an album, we have always delivered a digital product alongside them and priced our wedding collections accordingly. Until last year that digital delivery was via a nicely presented DVD, fully printed with our branding and personalised to the client – the presentation was nice and I was happy it added value to the product.
About a year ago we started to transition to USB delivery of digital goods, and for a long time I scoured the marketplace for a suitable product. I remembered meeting with the wonderful people at PhotoFlashDrive.com at the SWPP Convention in January 2014 and of all the products I have seen since then, theirs always stuck in my mind for the sheer quality of the product.
It was Barrie Downie’s stunning packaging that originally caught my eye, and this was exactly the type of product I had been looking for – the presentation of a quality USB device in a beautifully packaged jewellery style slip box – it was fabulous to look at and definitely added the WOW factor I always look for.

Now at the time, PhotoFlashDrive.com didn’t offer the product in colours that matched our branding, although they could do a custom job for me – so I thought about it at the time, but never did get around to placing an offer.
Well fast forward a few months – the company then introduced additional colour options for that particular product exactly matching our brand and I was hooked.
Now like you, my initial thoughts were – whoa this is a US-based company, won’t I have shipping delays to the UK and potential VAT and duty costs to contend with?
Well this is a smart company we are dealing with, they knew that to properly serve the UK marketplace they had to have those issues completely covered and they have done a fantastic job.
Everything is drop-shipped to the UK via Ireland on a weekly basis, so Customs and VAT are all taken care of. From there, they are then shipped to the UK using Parcel Post. Shipping times are fast as well, usually arriving in a week to 10 days from initial placement of order.
We are now delighted to include PhotoFlashDrive.com as one of our key suppliers to our business and we can’t recommend them highly enough.
If you would like to give the company a try, they have NO minimum order, NO setup fees and all customisation is done free of charge, so you can even order just one item.
I was lucky enough to spend time with the team again at this years convention and they showed me first hand some of their amazing products – one that stuck out for me was their CD/DVD replacement kits – if like we were, you are transitioning from DVD, then these kits are definitely worth a look.
Another standout product was their Premium Wood Boxes – Whilst they don’t match our particular brand, my wife Morag absolutely adored these premium wood boxes – these would be absolutely stunning for a baby photographer I would think – just beautiful.
Another key standout product was the company’s custom image wine boxes – yes I know I said the magic word – wine! (It’s 5 o’clock somewhere right?).
Now can you imagine the impact this would have on a wedding client?
You bring them into the studio to view their wedding photographs – show them a lovely slideshow over a nice glass of wine, and after the presentation is over, present them with another bottle of wine in this beautiful packaging with their wedding image as part of the packaging.
Can you imagine the impact!
Now if anyone attended my marketing talks at the convention you will know that this could be an amazing marketing tool to use as part of delivering additional product sales opportunities after the wedding.
Seeing their photograph as part of a stunning product like this will make them consider other products – “Do you love that photograph? Wouldn’t that be stunning as a fine art wall product to hang above your fireplace?”.
I love this product and you should definitely give it a try.
